Putting Standards and Storytelling together

"Stories with Class"

Each of these two new residency programs, Start with Stories and History Live!, was created to focus on grade-appropriate competencies. They contribute far more than enrichment. Each is an integrated package closely following Connecticut Standards. The combinations of performance and interactive classroom work take a fresh approach to the designated subject areas.

By the end of the residency, teachers will have gained familiarity with the art and practice of storytelling through class observation and a workshop, and encouragement to expand their use of oral stories in their classrooms. Our storyteachers can suggest suitable stories and follow-up activities for curriculum enhancement.

Start with Stories

Building Literacy and Specific Skills Across Connecticut's K-2 Curriculum

CSC's K-2 Literacy Program fosters enjoyment and love of spoken and written language. Using the art of storytelling, the program enhances active listening skills and stimulates vocabulary acquisition. It also enables students to visualize settings and scenarios, allowing them to predict outcomes and develop conversational skills. It aids them in processing new information and responding appropriately.

History Live!

A dynamic study of New England's heritage and history for Grades 3-5

Storytellers bring our heritage to life by transporting students to times past through dramatic presentations, using folklore from the oral tradition as well as historical sources. Through stories and class interaction, students compare and contrast different cultures and discover some of the factors, including geography and economics, that shape historical events. This study is designed to deepen students' understanding of specific content area, demonstrating how human beings have adapted to their physical and cultural environments. It illustrates how people create rules and laws to regulate the balance between individual rights and societal needs.

Each of our Stories with Class residencies allows for a minimum of five days of storyteller visits, with optional extensions. Each package consists of the following components:

Day 1: Three grade level assemblies (K, 1, & 2, OR 3, 4, & 5)

Days 2-5: A storyteller visits each class in ONE selected grade with a minimum of four visits per classroom.

Participating teachers attend one workshop given by the storyteller during the residency, focusing on:

  • how to best use their resident teller
  • how to tell stories to students
  • how to integrate stories into their everyday curriculum

Day 6: (Optional) Play in a Day (for full information, click the link.)

Day 7: (Optional) "A Family Night of Storytelling" (assembly)

Extra bonus for teachers:
All residency classroom teachers receive partial scholarships, during the year of their residency, to attend the Connecticut Storytelling Festival, held at the end of April.

The Connecticut Storytelling Center may be able to assist schools in seeking funding.
